That's the end (sort of) of that then.

So I learned something today that is disappointing in a way. RetroManCave tweeted the following:
A handheld ZX Spectrum Next. And they already have a working prototype.

Well, that puts paid to any notions that the Porta will be any kind of commercial venture for the masses. The ZX Spectrum Next, as unattainable as it is due to being a fauxstarter (a kickstarter that while genuine, does not actually kickstart anything), is an impressive machine, and far out-specs anything I would have made.

As such, as of now the Porta project is a personal project. If someone actually wants one when it's finished, then I might make another one. But I'm certainly not going to put top priority effort into it when a superior product is available. I'll probably still open-source it when done.

I predicted the Next team would do this to be fair. They a whole load of people working on the project, where as I only managed to get a friend to help out with some graphics. The last few weeks I've got the feeling nobody's interested anyway. For example:

  • Number of post views: Diminishing. The highest ever was 45 for the post on the Schematic. The most recent posts are 4 and 1 respectively.
  • Number of comments: None.
  • Number of contacts offering help: None.
  • Number of contacts suggesting collaboration: None.
  • Reposts: None that I'm aware of.
I'd use the cliché "I know where I'm not wanted" here if it didn't look so attention seeking.

I think from now on, I won't bother with projects like this unless it's of direct benefit to me alone, as nobody seems interested when I do these things.

Rant/Lament over.
